HERE IS MY WRAP-UP of Season Two of Battlestar Galactica, the Re-Imagining. Episodes include (among others) Epiphanies, Scar, Sacrifice, Lay Down Your Burdens (Pts 1&2). Thank you for joining us here in our dim, warm, popcorn-scented meeting space!
Last post I focused specifically on problematic uses of the Cylon character. » I also talked in general about the use of Sci-Fi and the practice of analyzing Sci-Fi through a socio-cultural/racial and “Feminist” lens. »
To show your great adoration and appreciation for those who clean up your candy wrappers, tip the usher at will. My main points along that line were that by having a blonde, white actress play the strong, smart, dominating, (superior) model of Cylon and the Asian actress playing a weak, confused, controlled, sleeper agent/spy/saboteur (inferior + not to be trusted) racist memes and iconry resonant in the US cultural memory were being implemented to aid our feelings/perceptions of these characters.
Powered by Hackadelic Sliding Notes 1.6.4 I hesitate to use words like this, which can have different meanings to different people, and attached to very strong emotional convictions. Know that I use the term here simply in the sense of an eye toward women being placed in passive/abused/2D characters, or times they are used only to further/prop up a male character, or instances otherwise where I feel a sexist or misogynist lens has been used to shape or present a female character’s characteristics, behavior, and/or fate.
